Culture

This year has so many good things in store, not least the Diamond Jubilee celebrations but also the Olympics.

And also a trip down south to Surrey will be combined with a visit to view an exhibition which takes place in Hampton Court Palace from 5th April to 30th September, which explores beauty through the lives and loves of 17th century courtesans.

Also the Swan Theatre,Stratford-upon-Avon and the historical play King John, directed by Maria Aberg which is yet another event planted well and truly in this years calendar.Taking place from 6th April to 15th Sept.

Not forgetting a country which is close to me even more so at this time of year,Ireland and the fantastic Chieftans, appear at the Symphony Hall Birmingham, on 5th June !!

St Patricks Day

Just before Easter  and the Royal Wedding on  April 29th,there is a day which will warm the heart of anyone who is Irish or even part Irish,it is of course March 17th,St Patricks Day.

A few facts relevant to Ireland(you may or may not already know)

The claddagh ring is made up of three parts, hands,a heart and a crown. The hands represent friendship, the heart = love and the crown represents loyalty.

Chicago since 1962 has been celebrating St Patricks day by dyeing their river green.

The harp is the “official”symbol of Ireland since medieval times.

And why do you think Ireland is called the “Emmerald Isle”?

It is due to the average rainfall- approximately:225 days rain on its West coast and approximately 150 days rain on the East coast, which as you can imagine makes for the greenest of meadows and fields.

Question:

What does the Gaelic phrase ” Cead Mille Failte” mean?

Answer:

It means “A hundred thousand welcomes”

And that in a nutshell, upon meeting a person of Irish descendency you will find  “ A hundred thousand welcomes” to greet you.A genuine warmth.
